Imitation Craft: Owl Quilt

I am a Chi Omega, and our symbol is the owl. One of my very best friends is my Chi Omega sister. We met through XO almost 15 years ago. We've been sisters, roommates, BFFs, bridesmaids in each other's weddings, and became mothers around the same time. In fact, we got married months apart from one another and both subsequently had two sons. (I had my twin boys and she had two single sons a year and a half apart.) But now she is pregnant with a little girl and I'm over the moon happy for her to have what we in the sorority world refer to as a "Legacy".

I have made quilts for all of her children (her two sons and her step-daughter), so I knew I was going to make a quilt for child #4. It only took me a few minutes of browsing through pinterest before I happened upon the perfect design!

What a perfect, sweet, little baby quilt for a Chi Omega legacy!

I wanted to find some owl fabric to incorporate, so I started at Spoonflower.com. One of the things I love about Spoonflower (other than the ability to customize fabrics!) is that you can search pretty specifically for the design and color you want. I was able to search for owls patterns that used bright pink and green. And many patterns (including the one I settled on) have collections that go together. (However, I ended up just getting the owl fabric because it does add up quickly, but if I had unlimited re$ources, I would have ordered from the collection). Some Spoonflower owl fabrics

Once I got the perfect owl fabric, the rest was easy. What do you think?

And, following with my recent tradition, I also made Baby P a XO legacy onesie to match my BFF's alumni tshirt (that I also made).

And, I realized that I had never made a legacy tshirt for her step-daughter (because she came into our lives a little older), so I went ahead and made one for her too. So now their whole family has matching letters. :)

And because we have another sister who is also expecting a little girl, I made one for her baby too. :)

Baby Quilt

If you have some spare time and a half dozen fat quarters laying around, you can make my new favorite baby quilt (Fat Quarter Baby Quilt Tutorial) like the one I made for a beautiful new little girl...

If you make one, you should add a picture of it to their Flickr group.

Also, because the baby girl was born to one of my sorority sisters, I couldn't help but take the opportunity to make this darling onesie to match her quilt.

Update: Here is a picture of baby Avery wearing her XO letters (with my two lovely sorority sisters!).

Virginia is for Lovers

Fifteen years ago, the day before the first day of classes Freshman year of college, I met a boy.  This little naive Indian boy, whose name I couldn't even pronounce upon reading, soon became one of my very best friends.

A few weeks ago, he became a daddy for the first time.  The first thing I did was make a little baby blanket for his new daughter.  But, I felt like something was missing.

I made this little onesie as a reminder to him that even though he literally lives half way around the world back in his home country, India, that he still has lots of friends and family in Hampton Roads that love him and desperately would love to meet his little girl.

Home is where the heart is.

Update: Here is a picture of my friend's daughter wearing her I ♥ VB onesie.

Onesie for the boys

I came up with a cute onesie for my friend's little boy.  Although really, this could be for a boy or a girl!

I used the actual strap from a play medal I had leftover from prizes for a scavenger hunt.  And I printed out the "medal" on iron transfer paper, and ironed it on to muslin, then sewed it on to the onesie.  You might be able to just iron it straight on to the onesie, but I think the muslin holds the color/image better than the onesie tshirt material.

I might have to do some "big boy" versions for Thing 1 and Thing 2.

More onesie fun

I'm just a nut for onesies right now!!  My last two posts have been about snazzing up plain onesies, and this post is no exception.

One of my best friends is pregnant with a baby girl.  Can you guess what she is naming her?

Here is a hint:

One more hint:

I hope she likes these little onesies I made for her little bundle of joy!

Now, I have to find a cute idea to do for a little boy for my other good friend currently expecting her 3rd boy!

Onesie Dress

To continue on with my obsession of re-fashioning plain onesies, I also found a great tutorial on how to make a dress using a plain onesie and some scrap material.

Here is the dress from the tutorial:

I started with a plain pink, short sleeve onesie from Hobby Lobby.

My skirt is actually made from fabric I have left over from my sorority letter making days in college.

I can't wait to see this on a pretty little girl.

Hoosier Onesie

One of my cousins had a baby girl last week.  I've been trying to think of something to make for them.

Recently, I stumbled on this awesome onesie on Pinterest.com

Since my cousin and his wife are both from Indiana, but living in Colorado, I decided to redo this onesie and put my own spin on it.  I think it came out so cute!

Notice that Indiana is made from a vegetable patch fabric! I thought it was so appropriate for this agricultural state.

I hope they love it and think of home every time she wears it.

Update:  Here is a picture of the blessed baby wearing the finished product
